Pipo M7pro Android Tablet Review

Pipo M7pro Android TabletThis is a hands-on review of the Pipo M7 pro, a slightly smaller version of the Pipo M9 pro. The Pipo M7 pro has a smaller 8.9 inch screen compared to the 10.1 inch screen on the M9 pro. In addition, the M7pro uses a PLS (Plane to Line Switching) panel display while the M9pro has an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel. Both panel technologies are similar with high brightness and wide viewing angle. However, PLS technology is more energy efficient compared to IPS. Other than this difference, all the other specifications for both devices are more or less the same.

Therefore, on this review, I will just make note of the differences between the 2 devices plus comparisons with the Nexus 7 which has a similar price range. You can refer to my Pipo M9pro review for the first impressions and performance sections as they mostly apply to the M7pro as well.

Pipo M7pro and Google Nexus 7 comparison

The Pipo M7pro currently retails for $279 for the WiFi only version (you can get it for under $220 on AliExpress) and $315 for the version with 3G (under $240 on AliExpress). Unfortunately for the M7pro, its specifications and price put it right in competition with the newly launched Google Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 has a smaller 7″ IPS display but with a similar 1920 x 1200 pixel. The Nexus 7 has a retail price of $269 for the 32 GB WiFi only version.

On top of that, the Nexus 7 has a few major advantages over the M7pro. The Nexus 7 has dual-band (2.4/5.0 GHz) WiFi that provides a more stable connection than a standard 2.4 GHz WiFi. The Nexus 7 is also NFC enabled and has support for wireless charging (Qi compatible).

Besides the bigger screen, the M7pro has a bigger 6400 mAh battery compared to the 3950 mAh battery on the Nexus 7. However, it is hard to make a direct comparison as the M7pro has a bigger screen that consumes more power. Pipo rates the battery on the M7pro as up to 6 hours while Google rates the battery on the Nexus 7 as up to 9 hours. Since I have not personally tested the new Nexus 7, I am not able to determine which is better.

The M7pro also has a 2 MP front camera while the Nexus 7 has a 1.2 MP camera. Both devices have 5 MP rear cameras. The camera modules on the Pipo tablets are average at best. Again, without any hands-on with the Nexus 7, the better camera cannot be determined from the specs alone.

Unless you value an 8.9 inch display a lot more over a 7 inch screen, it is hard to recommend the M7pro over the Nexus 7. For most people, the main reason to pick a China tablet over a branded Android tablet is the price savings. The M7pro is actually quite a decent performer. The similar M9pro scored 4 out of 5 stars in our review. However, with a retail price of $279, the M7pro loses much of its luster.

Conclusion

While the Pipo M7pro is an above average  tablet that has good quality and design, its ratings suffered because of how great the Google Nexus 7 is. Although you can get it at a much reasonable price from China online retailers, the Nexus still holds the edge over the M7pro. The dual-band WiFi, NFC and most likely better cameras are definitely worth the price difference.

However, between the two, only the M7pro has a 3G version for now. The Nexus 7’s 3G version has not been launched yet although it is already listed on the Google site as coming soon.

  1. Does the M7 Pro run Visual Basic 6? I want to buy a tablet but one of my requirements is for it to run VB6 (because it is best soft for develop app), but seems not any tablet support VB6. Do you know of tablet model that support VB6

    • The tablets on this site all run on the Android OS and therefore does not run VB6. You will need a Windows based tablet instead. However, there is an app that allows development on Android tablets, Basic4android, that has a syntax that is very similar to VB. Not sure how good it is though as I have never tried it.
