Ramos W42 Android Tablet Review

Ramos W42 ReviewThe Ramos W42 Android tablet is a 9.4″ 1280 x 800 pixel tablet running on the quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412. The 9.4″ display size is not very common. I only know of 2 other popular Android tablets with a 9.4″ screen. The first is the Pipo M8pro and the other is the Sony Xperia Tablet S. The Exynos 4412 used in the Ramos W42 is not very common either among China tablets. The quad-core based tablets are usually powered by either the Rockchip RK3188 or the Allwinner A31, both from China manufacturers.

The Exynos 4412 is used in a number of Samsung devices including the highly popular Samsung Galaxy SIII Android phone. It also powers the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung’s 10.1″ 1280 x 800 Android tablet. It is interesting to note that the 16GB WiFi only version of the Samsung Note 10.1 which has a slightly bigger display (10.1″ vs 9.4″) display but with the same resolution, and the very same processor as the W42 retails for about $450. The Samsung Note 10.1 currently ranks first on the list of top rated Tablet PCs on Amazon.

The Ramos W42 on the other hand sells for under $250. The Samsung of course has a few additional hardware features such as an extra GB of RAM, GPS receiver and much better quality cameras. However, if you can live without these features, you can save yourself a hefty sum.

First Impressions

The design of the Ramos W42 is as simple and as generic as you can get. However, the built quality is good and that is what is important in my books. The back of the tablet has an aluminum cover and that is a nice touch as it provides a little more rigidity to the tablet housing. Metal enclosures do cause problem with wireless reception but Ramos solved this problem by having a strip of plastic at the top edge of the back cover where the rear camera is mounted. The WiFi antenna is also housed in this area so it does not get blocked by the metal cover.

On the left side of the tablet is where all the buttons and ports are located. There is a power button and a volume rocker button. The ports include a microUSB port, a microSD memory card expansion slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, a power port and a microphone. Note that there is no HDMI port on the W42. If you plan to output to an external display, you will need to do this wirelessly using DLNA or a device like the Google Chromecast.

There is a single speaker at the back. Besides the screen, the front of the tablet also houses the 0.3 MP front camera.

The Ramos W42 measures 235 x 170 x 10.5 mm ( 9.3 x 6.7 x 0.41 in) and weighs 524 g (1.15 lb).  It is just about the right size and not too heavy as well. It is certainly a nice option for those who find the 9.7″ iPad sized tablets a little too heavy. The W42 is about 100 g (3.5 oz) lighter.

As mentioned earlier, the Ramos W42 is powered by an Exynos 4412 quad-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor. It is backed up with 1GB RAM and 16 GB storage ROM. It would have been ideal if the RAM had been doubled to 2GB like on the Samsung Note 10.1.

The screen is a 9.4″ 1280 x 800 pixel resolution IPS panel. Like most IPS screens, it has very good contrast, color saturation and brightness. It also has a great viewing angle. IPS screens suffers from poor visibility under bright outdoor conditions and the screen on the Ramos W42 is no different.

The Ramos W42 comes with dual front and rear cameras. The front camera is 0.3 MP while the rear camera is 2MP.

Bluetooth V4.0 or BLE is included. This is a plus point for those who plan to pair their tablets to wireless BT speakers or headphones. BLE helps reduce battery drain while using Bluetooth with its lower energy requirement. The tablet does not come with a built-in GPS receiver.

Last but not least, the battery is rated at 5400 mAh which seems a little on the small side.

Ramos W42 Performance

The Exynos 4412 is the same chip that Samsung uses to power their international versions (except North America and Japan) of the Samsung Galaxy SIII and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 devices. Both these devices are best sellers and highly rated products.

The Note 10.1 shares the same 1280 x 800 resolution screen while the SIII has a 1280 x 720 display. With the same processor and a similar display. the Ramos W42 has performance that is similar to both these products. Tasks like multi-tab browsing, video playback and streaming, and even 3D gaming runs smoothly on the tablet. I am quite impressed with the performance I got out of this tablet and the smaller RAM didn’t seem to affect the performance as far as I can tell.

Battery performance is stellar considering it only comes with a 5,400 mAh battery. I had no problems stretching the battery life to 7 hours as rated by the manufacturer. This is of course with moderate use with a mix of browsing, ebook reading, gaming and watching videos. However, WiFi is turned on at all times. Once again, I am reminded that we cannot judge performance from the numbers on a spec sheet.

WiFi performance is above average.  The plastic cover seems to have helped to ensure that the WiFi reception is not affected by the metal cover.

On the negative side. the single mono speaker is a little disappointing. The volume is rather weak and unless you are using the tablet in a really quiet room, you will need to make use of a pair of headphones or external speakers.

The cameras are also disappointing but this is true for almost every single China tablet I have reviewed.

It is also strange that Ramos decided to skimp on the HDMI out port. Most China tablets have HDMI, even on much cheaper units. However, I do have to admit that I seldom make use of the feature so perhaps it is not such a big loss.

The microUSB port cannot be used for charging the tablet. You have to make use of the included charger. With the number of mobile devices that I bring along with me, the last thing that I need is to remember to bring a custom charger along.

Conclusion

The Ramos W42 is a little different from all the other China tablets that are on the market. I am glad that Ramos decided to take a little risk the W42 instead of just creating another me-too clone. The Exynos 4412 may not be the most powerful quad-core chip around but it is in used by many more devices compared to the RK3188 and A31. This means that most developers are familiar with this chip. In the highly fragmented world of Android, this is a good thing.

The display may not be a retina screen but it is a good fit for the 9.4″ size. Not having a retina class screen means better performance and battery life both which are proven to be true on the Ramos W42.

The design is nothing much to should about but the built quality is good. The lack of a HDMI port is a but puzzling but it may not be a concern to many users. The biggest negative point for me is that I need to carry around an extra charger just for the W42. Chances are high that I would forget to do this on one of my trips and I am left with lugging around a useless piece of plastic with me.
