Review: Onda V701s Quad-Core Android Tablet
I need to start off this review of the Onda V701s quad-core Android tablet by making a few clarifications. First of all, the Onda V701s seems to be identical to the Onda V711s. By comparing photos and specifications, both models are identical as far as I can tell. I do not know why Onda has 2 different model numbers for what seem like identical products. Since, the unit I am reviewing has the Onda V701s marking on both the box and the tablet PC itself, I am referring to it as such. Secondly, there is an older version of the Onda V701s that does not have the “s” suffix. This older version is a dual-core version with an Amlogic AML8726-MX SoC. The newer Onda V701s on the other hand, is powered by an Allwinner A31s quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 with a PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU. Now that we have established which Onda V701s Android tablet that I am reviewing here, we can now proceed with the actual review. Buy from AliExpress First Impressions The Onda V701s’ biggest selling point and it is non-discreetly plastered all over the box is that it is the thinnest and lightest 7 inch Android tablet. I do not know if it is actually the thinnest but the 7.4 mm thickness is very thin and it is the thinnest Chinese branded tablet that I have come across so far. The Onda V701s has an aluminum body that makes it possible for it to have such a svelte body dimension. The metal construction also gives the tablet a classy look the belies its budget price tag. The Onda V701s’ feather light 280g does make the...
Review: Cube U25GT Dual-Core Android Tablet
This is a review of the Cube U25GT2 dual-core Android Mini PC powered by a Rockchip RK3168 ARM Cortex-A9 chipset. There is also an older version of the Cube U25GT with a single-core Rockchip RK2928 Cortex-A9 chipset. As far as I can tell, there is no noticeable difference externally. Pricing online also shows very little difference between the single-core and dual-core models. I do not have the single-core version for comparison but the RK3168 processor is an updated version of the very popular dual-core RK3066. The RK3066 is probably one of the most popular dual-core processors and is widely used by many dual-core China tablet PCs. The RK3168 is rated to have the similar performance as the RK3066 but with lower power requirement. The RK3168 is based on 28nm technology, similar to the quad-core RK3188. The other difference between the RK3168 and the older RK3066 and RK2928 is that the GPU is a PowerVR SGX 540 instead of a Mali 400 MP4. The PowerVR SGX series of GPU are used in many SoCs including the Apple A4 chip that powers the iPhone 4. On paper, the RK3168 version should comfortably out perform the single-core RK2928 version. Besides the processor upgrade, the built-in battery has also been bumped up from 2500 mAh to 3200 mAh. Although the RK3168 is more power efficient that the RK3066, a dual-core chipset does require more juice compared to a single core model. Although the battery capacity has been increased by about 30%, the rated battery life is expected to be around the same which is about 3 to 4 hours of continuous use. The Cube U25GT has gained a lot of interest as it is one of the cheapest 7″ dual-core Android tablet PC in the market. It has a street price of around $70 to $80 including free international shipping from retailers like Dino Direct and AliExpress. Ainol Novo 7 Crystal II Android Tablet Review
The Ainol brand is quite well known especially for their lower-end Android tablet products. The Ainol Novo 7 Crystal II Android tablet is a sub-$100 tablet that provides quite a bit of bang for the buck. Not everyone requires a big screen, state-of-the-art tablet with all the latest hardware features. For some, all they need is a small and portable device that is primarily used for web browsing, e-mail, reading and posting the latest Facebook posts or Twitter tweet, and maybe a little Plants vs Zombies. There are also those who do not want to bring their high-end tablet along with them when going for a business trip or vacation for fear of losing their precious tablet. What they need instead is a cheap tablet for checking email and social media while traveling. At the same time, if the tablet gets misplaced or stolen, the financial loss is minimal (data is all saved to the cloud). Last but not least, a budget tablet like the Ainol Novo 7 Crystal II is also ideal as your child’s first Android tablet. Install a child friendly user interface that only allows your child to access certain apps and to block purchasing and downloading of apps, and you have a great kid tablet. Since it is cheap, it won’t burn such a big hole in your wallet should it get damaged. If you fit into any of the 3 categories above, the Crystal II can be an ideal Android tablet for you. However, the budget price also means that the tablet cannot meet some of the “minimum” specs that I have listed in my “How to select a tablet” guide on the main page. For example, the screen resolution is only 1024 x 600 although I recommended at least a 1280 x 800 screen. Since the Crystal II only has a 7″ screen, this compromise is acceptable. The quad-core ATM7029 can be a little misleading. The ATM7029 has four ARM Cortex-A5 CPUs compared to the Cortex-A9 on the RK3188. The Cortex-A5 is designed to be a low cost chip with low power requirements. This makes the ATM7029 better than the RK3188 at prolonging battery life but at the expense of processing power. In certain cases, the ATM7029 can even lose out to the dual-core RK3066. However for simple tasks, the ATM7029 is ideal for providing processing power while saving on battery. If you can stretch your budget a bit more, you may also want to consider the Ainol Novo 7 Flame. For a full review of the Ainol Novo 7 Crystal II, please go to our companion site, Androydz.com.
