Review: Pipo M8 Pro Android Tablet
Android tablet PCs from China usually draw their hardware and design inspiration from popular tablets like the Apple iPad, iPad mini, Google Nexus tablets and Samsung tablets. You can almost always tell which popular tablet that the China tablet is “inspired” by. Therefore, it is quite refreshing to come across the Pipo M8 Pro Android tablet. Most of the tablets in Pipo’s current tablet line-up don’t have the obvious clone look but the Pipo M8 Pro look rather different from the rest of its brethren. If I have to pick a popular brand that the Pipo M8 Pro resemble closest to, I would pick Sony. Come to think of it, Sony does come up with rather nice designs for their tablets and I am surprised that it has taken this long for a Sony-like clone to come along. Besides the rather “unique” design, the Pipo M8 Pro also has another distinctive feature. It has a 9.4 inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution. The only other tablet that I have come across that has a similar 9.4 inch display is the Ramos W42. It is obvious that most China tablet manufacturers are cashing in on the popularity of the top-selling iOS and Android tablets. They are targeted at users who are not willing to pay top dollar for the originals and are willing to make compromises. However, the Pipo M8 Pro is rather unique as I found it to be a rather good tablet in its own rights and not because it is a rather good clone. Ramos W42 Android Tablet Review
The Ramos W42 Android tablet is a 9.4″ 1280 x 800 pixel tablet running on the quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412. The 9.4″ display size is not very common. I only know of 2 other popular Android tablets with a 9.4″ screen. The first is the Pipo M8pro and the other is the Sony Xperia Tablet S. The Exynos 4412 used in the Ramos W42 is not very common either among China tablets. The quad-core based tablets are usually powered by either the Rockchip RK3188 or the Allwinner A31, both from China manufacturers. The Exynos 4412 is used in a number of Samsung devices including the highly popular Samsung Galaxy SIII Android phone. It also powers the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung’s 10.1″ 1280 x 800 Android tablet. It is interesting to note that the 16GB WiFi only version of the Samsung Note 10.1 which has a slightly bigger display (10.1″ vs 9.4″) display but with the same resolution, and the very same processor as the W42 retails for about $450. The Samsung Note 10.1 currently ranks first on the list of top rated Tablet PCs on Amazon. The Ramos W42 on the other hand sells for under $250. The Samsung of course has a few additional hardware features such as an extra GB of RAM, GPS receiver and much better quality cameras. However, if you can live without these features, you can save yourself a hefty sum. Buy from AliExpress First Impressions The design of the Ramos W42 is as simple and as generic as you can get. However, the built quality is good and that is what is important in my books. The back of the tablet has an aluminum cover and that is a nice touch as it provides a little more rigidity to the tablet housing. Metal enclosures do cause problem with wireless reception but Ramos solved this problem by having a strip of plastic at the top edge of the back cover where the rear camera is mounted. The WiFi antenna is also housed in this area so it does not get blocked by the metal cover. On the...
