Review: Ainol Novo 9 Spark Android Tablet
This is a review of the Ainol Novo 9 Spark Android Tablet with 9.7 inch 2048 x 1536 retina IPS screen and powered by an Allwinner A31 quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 chipset. The 9.7″ form factor with retina display seems to be very popular among the China tablet PC manufacturers. Every brand seems to have at least 1 or even 2 models running on different chipsets. Ainol has two versions of the Novo 9 but they both run on the same Allwinner A31 quad-core processor. The Novo 9 Spark comes in white while the Novo 9 Firewire comes in black. The Firewire version was released later than the Spark version and if you are to buy one today, the Firewire version will more likely have a newer firmware version. The Ainol Novo 9 Spark initial firmware is buggy and caused all kinds of problems from poor WiFi to laggy performance. If you are uncomfortable with updating firmware, it is best that you stick with the Firewire black version. Review: Chuwi V99 Quad-Core Android Tablet
First of all, this is a review of the Chuwi V99 quad-core Allwinner A31 Android tablet. The reason I need to highlight this is that there is another version of the Chuwi V99 that is powered by a dual-core Rockchip Rk3066. Both models look similar as in both look very much like an Apple iPad. All the major China tablet manufacturers have their own versions of the iPad clone. All of them come with a 9.7 inch 2048 x 1536 retina screen. A few of them, like Chuwi, even have multiple versions with different processors. The devices that Top China Tablets has reviewed so far are the Vido N90 FHDRK, Onda V972 and Pipo M6. The Vido N90 FHDRK and Pipo M6 both come with the quad-core RK3188 chip while the Onda V972 comes with an Allwinner A31 processor, like the Chuwi V99. The Onda V972 is actually quite a decent device with good performance overall except for one critical area. It had very poor battery life. As a result, it only got an average score from us. Since the Chuwi V99 had very similar hardware as the Onda V972, I was naturally worried about the battery life as well. Fortunately, I am glad to report that the Chuwi 99 actually has very decent battery life for a unit with a retina display. Onda V972 Android Tablet Review
The Onda V972 quad-core Allwinner A31 Android tablet with 9.7 inch 2048 x 1536 retina screen is Onda’s version of the iPad clone. The tablet runs on Android instead of iOS but it is obviously “inspired” by the iPad. Android tablets usually have widescreen aspect displays but the V972 has the same 9.7 inch retina 2048 x 1536 display with a 4:3 aspect ratio as the iPad. The display is not the only feature that Onda borrowed from the Apple designers. The entire unit actually looks very much like an iPad including the size right up to the tapered metallic back cover and the placement of the rear camera. From a distance it is actually not easy to tell them apart if it is not for the giveaway missing Apple logo at the back. If I were to stick an Apple logo at the back of the V972, I probably could have fooled a lot of people. Putting the iPad inspired design aside, the Onda V972 does have quite decent hardware specifications. It actually shares a lot of hardware similarities with another iPad clone, the Pipo M6 Android tablet. On paper, the V972 actually looks very good when stacked against the iPad. This is an amazing achievement considering that the tablet costs less than half what the latest iPad costs. But how well does it perform in real world tests? We are about to find out.
